Reasons For Applying For Disability Benefits
There may be any number of reasons for a person who is disabled to not seek Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits. The disabled person may believe that he or she has enough savings to see himself or herself through. The person may feel that Medicaid or Medicare benefits are adequate. Some people even feel that they are not “worth” the assistance that SSD or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits provide.
The fact is, Social Security operates as an important safety net for working Americans and you have been a financial contributor to the system for as long as you have been receiving a paycheck.
I am attorney Timothy White, and I have been helping people throughout Illinois get the assistance that they need for more than 18 years. You may have very good reasons for applying for disability benefits, and I am here to help you explore your options and guide you through this process.
Dispelling The Myths Surrounding Social Security Benefits
There are a number of myths and misinformation surrounding Social Security benefits. The main thing to keep in mind is that if you suffer from a disabling physical condition or mental condition, you may be eligible to receive medical benefits and other benefits through Social Security.
Many people assume that they must wait a certain period of time before they may file for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). In reality, you can file for benefits the same day that you become disabled. There is no waiting period, and in some cases there is no income requirement, so you do not have to drain your bank account before you are eligible for Social Security.
Even if you have been out of work for months, or in some cases years, you may still be eligible for Social Security. If you have been paying into the Social Security system over the course of your working years, there is no good reason for not applying for these benefits.
Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. If you are out of work due to a minor illness or are suffering from a disability that is likely to last less than one year, then you should probably not make a benefits claim.
However, if you are suffering from a chronic condition, or if your child or spouse has a chronic illness or disability, there is no reason to wait. When you come to the Law Offices of Timothy R. White, P.C., I will personally review your situation and help determine which steps should be taken next.
